    Modern Sound in Action since 1996

    With their story made of three adrenalin filled albums, hundreds of gigs and an unique mix of punk rock wars, blues explosions and new wave shocks, CUT are one of the best (re)known Italian underground bands. On stage (where they are sometimes helped by the sweet and raw vocals of soul sister Cristina Negrini) they are a tight, exciting and super electric rock and roll combo, cemented by constant touring. On record, while they manage to convey the energy of their live shows, CUT always try to push the envelope a little more, revealing unexpected sides and shades to their sound (well, check out their new album!). Totally immune to the detachment and coldness of the post modern era CUT are committed to one goal: to bring back danger and excitement to the underground scene, be it in Italy or elsewhere. With their third album "Bare Bones", recorded as its predecessor by Slowdime's one and only Juan Luis Carrera, the band dig deep into their garage, funk and soul roots to deliver 13 burning tracks of super charged rock and roll. And (guess what?) they were doing it long before it became fashionable again. Here follows a brief band bio...

    In the beginning…

    February 1996:CUT get together in Bologna, Italy, with the intention of bringing back danger and excitement to the Italian underground scene. Since then they never stopped playing live, sharing the stage with the likes of the Violent Femmes, Heavy Trash, The Make Up, Unwound, Ulan Bator, Royal Trux, International Noise Conspiracy, Eels, Delta '72, Man Or Astroman, Old Time Relijun, The Hives and many other Italian and international acts. Constant touring, all over Italy and Europe, has made a lot of people familiar with their sound, an unique mix of punk rock wars, blues explosions and new wave shocks. Here's a brief story, record by record.

    Operation Manitoba

    March 1998: CUT record their first album, Operation Manitoba. This surprisingly energetic debut has obtained rave reviews from both the underground and mainstream press: rock journalist Luca Frazzi, from 'Rumore', the biggest rock mag in Italy, has described Operation Manitoba as : '..best Italian debut of 1998, no contest.'(Rumore,n.82,Nov.'98). Following the release of the album CUT have played almost 150 gigs, touring Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia and Slovenia. The band also appeared in two Italian national tv shows and was featured in the Beach Bum Festival 1999 line up to play with (among others) Sonic Youth and Pavement.

    Will U Die 4 Me?

    May 2000: CUT retreat in the studio with American producer and label manager Juan Luis Carrera of Slowdime Records to record the follow up to "Operation Manitoba". The record, appropriately titled "Will U Die 4 Me?", came out in February 2001 and was saluted as the band's masterpiece even obscuring the merits of its predecessor. After the release of their second effort the band took off for a long Italian and European tour. In September 2001 they were asked to be featured on the bill of the Independent Days Festival, to play with The International Noise Conspiracy and Man Or Astroman?

    Torture

    March 2002: four tracks written before the release of "Will U Die 4 Me?" three originals and one cover of the Prince classic "Sign o' the Times" are released as a single. The "Torture" e.p. also features a cd rom section which includes the two videos the band shot for the songs "Sugar Babe" and "Will U Die 4 Me?".

    Bare Bones

    October 2003 has seen the release of CUT's third album "Bare Bones" in which the band dig deep into their garage, funk and soul roots to deliver 13 burning tracks of over excited rock and roll. Juan Carrera is behind the mixing desk again but this time the band has pushed the envelope a little more revealing new shades to their sound while still conveying the energy of their legendary live shows.

    A Different Beat

    In February 2006 CUT have become 10 years old and to celebrate their decade long history they have crafted their best work to date. Never the band has sounded so powerful and self confident as on “A Different Beat”, their brand new album combining the raw power of “Will U Die 4 Me?” and the songwriting class of “Bare Bones” for an explosive mix that will totally get your rocks off. “A Different Beat” also marks CUT’s debut on their new record label Homesleep that will also take care of European distribution. Guests include Bruno Germano from Settlefish and a wild collective of kindred souls known as Julie’s Haircut. “A Different Beat” has been officially released on the Italian territory on March 6, 2006. One year later it has been released in the UK too, to very positive reviews.

    Odds and sods

    CUT have recorded their version of a Red Red Meat song. The track will be released by Bologna's own Unhip Records on a tribute compilation to this unique American band. The comp will feature, among others: Mark Lanegan, Calexico, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Calexico and many others. CUT are the only Italian outfit featured on the tribute. They chose to cover the song "Sulfur" the atmospheric opener from "There's A Star Above The Manger Tonight", one of Red Red Meat's masterpieces.

    In the beginning

    I CUT nascono a Bologna neI febbraio 1996 ed esordiscono dal vivo nel giugno dello stesso anno. E' l'inizio di un'incessante attività live che dura tuttora e che ha portato la band a esibirsi su e giù per l'Italia e l'Europa centrale. Dividono il palco con (tra gli altri): Make-Up, Unwound, Royal Trux, Ulan Bator, Speedball Baby, Three Second Kiss, Delta 72, Hives, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Capitol City Dusters, One Dimensional Man, Enfance Rouge, Old Time Relijun, Eels, Man or Astro-man?.

    Trouble/Desire

    Il gruppo registra il proprio primo demo tape Trouble/Desire. E' il marzo 1997. Nel novembre dello stesso anno esce Metal Machine Muzak, primo prodotto dell'etichetta bolognese Gamma Pop e prima uscita "ufficiale" dei CUT. La compilation, oltre a "Psycho" dei CUT, vede la partecipazione di bands quali Massimo Volume, Headcleaner, Ulan Bator, Three Second Kiss e di gran parte dei nomi più interessanti dell'underground italiano.

    Operation Manitoba

    Un anno dopo le sessions di Trouble/Desire i CUT fanno irruzione nei Sub Cave Studios di Bologna per uscirne con il master di Operation Manitoba, esordio "ufficiale" del gruppo. Mixato da Fabio Magistrali il disco esce nell'autunno '98 e viene seguito da un lungo tour che porta la band fin sul palco del Beach Bum festival 2000. Operation Manitoba, registrato live in studio, è una fedele fotografia del suono dei CUT fino a quel momento affidato principalmente ai concerti dal vivo. Il disco viene accolto in maniera estremamente positiva dalla "stampa specializzata" con recensioni, articoli e interviste su Rumore, Mucchio Selvaggio, Rockerilla, Rocksound, Bassa Fedeltà, Jammai nonchè su innumerevoli fanzines. Luca Frazzi di Rumore definisce Operation Manitoba: "..disco italiano dell'anno." (Rumore, n.82, Nov.98).

    Will U Die 4 Me?

    I CUT rientrano in studio con il fonico americano Juan Luis Carrera, comproprietario della Slowdime Records, per registrare il seguito di "Operation Manitoba". Il disco, uscito nel febbraio 2001 sempre per Gamma Pop, porta il titolo di Will U Die 4 Me? ed è la testimonianza di due anni di sforzi e passione nella vita della band, che hanno portato ad alcuni cambi di formazione e a una evidente crescita musicale. L'intenso tour promozionale seguito all'uscita di Will U Die 4 Me? (50 concerti nella prima metà del 2001) porta i CUT a suonare più volte oltre i confini nazionali e ad aprire il programma dell'edizione 2001 del festival Independent Days.

    Torture

    Nel dicembre 2001 la band registra quattro tracce scritte prima dell'uscita del secondo album e ormai parte integrante del proprio live show. I brani, tre originali del gruppo e una cover del classico di Prince "Sign o' the Times", saranno raccolti in un EP uscito a marzo 2002. Il disco, intitolato Torture, contiene anche una sezione ROM che raccoglie i due video che la band ha girato per i brani "Sugar Babe" e "Will U Die 4 Me?".

    Bare Bones

    Il 3 ottobre 2003 è la data di uscita di Bare Bones, nuovo album della band: Juan Carrera è ancora una volta dietro al mixer per un disco che mostra nuove prospettive per il suono dei CUT, tra garage, new wave e deragliante rock and roll sporcato di rumore. Al disco segue l'uscita europea di un remix in chiave electro funk di due pezzi presenti su Bare Bones ("Animal Lady" e "My Baby Just Wants to Be Alive") a opera del dj Angelo Sindaco. Il singolo comparirà sotto il moniker Cut Off. Sotto lo stesso nome è uscita una cover, molto personale, di "Showroom Dummies" dei Kraftwerk, realizzata appositamente per una compilation legata a una mostra londinese sulla stilista Vivienne Westwood. Rimanendo in tema di cover i CUT hanno appena ultimato la registrazione di un brano dei Red Red Meat destinato a essere incluso in una compilation tributo al gruppo americano in uscita a breve per l'etichetta bolognese Unhip. Gli altri nomi coinvolti? Mark Lanegan, Calexico, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Calexico, Settlefish e tanti altri.

    A Different Beat

    Il quarto disco dei Cut esce il 6 marzo 2006 e si chiama A Different Beat. Le tredici canzoni del disco sono state registrate e mixate all'Esagono Recording Studio di Rubiera, con l'impagabile ausilio di Bruno "Mozart" Germano (Settlefish) e Andrea Rovacchi (Slugs). "A Different Beat" viene stampato, promosso e distribuito in Italia e in Europa attraverso Homesleep Music, segnando così l'inizio della collaborazione tra i CUT e la gloriosa etichetta di stanza a Bologna. Nel marzo 2007 l’album viene pubblicato in Inghilterra ottenendo ottime recensioni da parte della stampa specializzata.
